Hello
Meet Gavin Lilley
Gavin has worked in the field of sign language training and development for over 20 years, drawing from his home experience as a native deaf British Sign Language (BSL) user from a multi-generational deaf family.
Within his immediate family there is also use of both Estonian and Finnish Sign Languages. Having worked as an anchor for an international deaf news programme and as a translator, Gavin is also fluent in international sign language variations, as well as in American Sign Language.
More about Gavin
Gavin has immense experience as a teacher and assessor of BSL, having delivered this
language to thousands of students all over the country. This includes his work delivering
BSL from Levels 1 through to 6 at the Universities of Central Lancashire, The University of
Sussex and a number of organisations and centres.

He continues to deliver a range of Continuing Professional Development workshops to
sign language interpreters, students and several deaf organisations. His workshops on
international signing, the visual use of sign language, deaf humour and adapting language
use accordingly, have been well received by many professionals in this field. Feedback
has been overwhelmingly positive on his approachable, modern and entertaining training
style.
x
Experience from his work as a stand up comedian touring all over Europe, using a range
of sign languages, Gavin has also brought laughter through his hilarious stories to deaf
and hearing people in many regions across Europe. He has appeared on television and on
stage at the 21 Soho Theatre, the Helsinki Apollo and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Drawing on these experiences, he has worked with several organisations and services all
over the countries providing deaf awareness and sign language training to first
responders, emergency services and large corporations such as Barclays Bank and
Cadburys Chocolate. Gavin has also provided sign language translations for many
organisations, the most prominent of which are the 2012 London Olympics, Buckingham
Palace and The Museum of London.

Gavin has also worked with Giovanni Pernice and Tasha Ghouri on a social media
campaign to promote BSL and appeared alongside John Bishop on ITV’s “Life after Deaf”
programme. Recently he has been working with Amazon to develop the “Hand Talk”
language, a fantasy sign language used by the Aiel in the “Wheel of Time” series on
Amazon Prime.
